SGS volunteer teachers have come back to Shanghai after two months of teaching at the poverty-stricken mountainous areas.

To date, six SGS employees have taught pupils at the Jiajiawa Primary School in Longxi county, Gansu province as volunteer teachers.

Since SGS called on its employees to become volunteer teachers at the end of 2008, more than 100 employees have volunteered to teach at the mountainous areas, said an SGS manager.

Finally, 11 employees have been chosen as volunteer teachers to teach English and Science in the school for the 2009 school year, he said.

The returned employees made speeches to tell their colleagues about what they experienced during their stay in the mountainous areas.

``There are too many things which moved us and have left in our hearts although we stayed there only 60 days,'' said one of them.

``I was deeply moved by what we had experienced. Children's yearning for knowledge made me unforgettable,'' said Chen Jukui.

Chen said the poverty in the rural areas is unbelievable, adding that ``every time when I visited a pupil's family, I had a deep understanding.''

They said they live in a much more favourable condition than those children do.

``Therefore, we should value what we have and we should contribute our love to them who yearn for study,'' Chen said.

Zeng Ting, another volunteer teacher, often remembered the scene when children recited in the morning as if she heard the sound of their reading.

``I can't forget the scene when they took down from dictation and their smiles when they made progress,'' she said.

Zeng took out a vivid gouache, saying that this was drawn by a child who presented it to her as a gift.

``It is commemorable,'' she said.

The speeches made by volunteer teachers were praised by SGS employees. ``They are a pride of SGS, setting a good example to us,'' said the manager.
